During the summer months you will notice firefighters are flowing fire hydrants through different sections of the township. This testing helps insure your firefighters are knowledgeable about the general water volumes available for firefighting operations, note if there are any major changes from previous tests, at the same time helping them spot hydrants that may require maintenance or have problems with accessibility.
Firefighters will endeavor to protect the area around a hydrant they plan for testing and will flush the hydrant prior to beginning their evaluations in order to remove any sediment or discoloration in the water. Property owners should be aware if access is blocked to a fire hydrant firefighters may remove such impedance or request the property owner to do so to insure unrestricted access to the fire hydrant is maintained. Ohio Fire Code requires all hydrants have a minimum unobstructed access of 3 feet on any given side of the fire hydrant.
